East of Adelaide
by Julia Thurston
25 November - 6 December 2025
Shoreditch, 1834. Southwark, 1844. Adelaide, 1854. Elizabeth, Emily, and Eleanor strive for ownership and agency over their own lives. They seek stability, freedom, and adventure. They fall in love. And they all marry the same man.
Over the course of twenty years, Elizabeth, Emily and Eleanor grapple with poverty, infidelity and abandonment. Stuck in a world where they are bound to obey their husband, how much choice do they really have? Overlapping timelines show histories repeating themselves in this true story of ambition, betrayal and resilience, set against the harsh backdrop of Victorian London while the threat — or allure — of a new life in Australia looms ahead.
East of Adelaide is the new play by Offie Award-winning playwright Julia Thurston and produced by four-time Offie Award-winning theatre company Threedumb Theatre.
